spring-inspired, colorful styled shoot at PAIKKA

Well, I’m not quite sure what to say about the current state of the world. It is a strange history we are living in. The coronavirus has had such a profound impact on the world that it feels a little odd to keep going about my daily business. But if there is one thing event professionals know, it’s how to create and showcase beauty. I thought you might enjoy getting distracted with some beautiful images to get you excited about spring. Also, I realized I never blogged this incredible styled shoot from 2018 and it NEEDS to be shared!

When Meg Cooper reached out to me saying she wanted to get together for another styled shoot I jumped at the opportunity. See here and here for why I love working with Meg. We started to brainstorm and from the beginning knew we wanted to incorporate COLOR in the shoot. Weddings had been trending on the neutral end of the color spectrum – white/ivory/blush had been dominating wedding blogs and Pinterest. We wanted to play with color! Then we found THE dress from Sweet Caroline and the ideas came flooding in. We put together an outstanding vendor team and the final result was beyond what I could have ever imagined!

Styled shoots require a lot from vendor partners (time, money and resources) but this shoot proved why they are worth it – we get to play! We get to have fun with the design and take risks that real-life couples don’t necessarily want to take for their wedding. It’s a way to renew our creative energy while hopefully inspiring others in their own event design. Admittedly, to recreate most styled shoots for an entire wedding design would cost A LOT of money, but that’s why these shoots are always heavy on the details. Maybe you’ll see one small element that sparks your interest! And there are a lot of details in this one to choose from – a floral basket for the bride in lieu of a bouquet, acrylic “place card” boxes filled with flowers that double as a take-home favor, a statement floral install for your head table or sweetheart table, mixing of dark wood with white milk glass for layered table settings.

We were lucky to have this shoot featured in the 2018 Fall/Winter issue of Minnesota Bride! I included our original mood board so you can see how we went from ideas to conception. Scroll to the bottom for the full list of vendors!

This Sweet Caroline dress (it’s actually two pieces) is what inspired the entire shoot, and it almost didn’t make it! Due to an annoying shipping issue, we had to send my husband on a wild goose chase to multiple post offices on the morning of the shoot looking for the lost package. After persuading a postal worker to dig through a pile of packages he raced across town to get us the dress just as hair and makeup was finishing up. It wouldn’t be a wedding-related event if there wasn’t a little drama!

One of my favorite details was the acrylic “place cards,” which were small boxes filled with mini blooms and hand-calligraphed names. These double as a guest favor as well.
